Drug Services

Disclaimer: Please note that a listing on this page in no way implies any endorsement by Territory Users Forum Inc of any agency, service, program or pharmacotherapy treatment. The long term effects of buprenorphine (Subutex) on the human body are not yet known. Methadone is known to cause numerous health problems for short, medium and long term users.

We were hopeful that the election of a new Government in 2001 would enable the provision of the widest range of treatments for those with drug dependency.  Instead, the limited detoxification program has ceased to operate and the number of "detox" beds available is extremely limited. It is virtually impossible to access an inpatient detox bed.

Although the Government have implemented methadone maintenance and buprenorphine withdrawal and maintenance programs, these programs are totally inadequate. The waiting list is far too long and the staff at Alcohol and Other Drugs refuse to release a list of General Practitioners who are prescribing buprenorphine or methadone.

Many drug users experience hostility from staff at Alcohol and Other Drugs. If you have any problems accessing this or any other service listed, or if you would like to help TUF to push for improved services and attitudes for drug users contact TUF.

For more background on pharmacotherapies in the NT you may wish to visit our TUF... on Pharmacotherapies page.
