Arrests

IF YOU ARE ARRESTED

DO NOT

  • Resist Arrest
  • Be abusive or disorderly
  • Answer any questions except to give your name and address
  • Give or sign a statement
  • Plead guilty to anything, until you have spoken to a solicitor

DO

  • Ask why you are being arrested
  • Give your name and address
  • Ask the police  for a telephone so you can contact a lawyer
  • Ask for bail. If refused, ask police to telephone a magistrate to apply for bail
  • If the police ask you for your name, you can ask them their name. Write this down for future reference.

If you believe that it is likely that you are going to be arrested, you may choose to carry a a letter (example below) on you to ensure that your rights are protected. If arrested, give the police a copy of the letter immediately.
